Osing evidence from the first document where it was mentioned, Plettenberg, then known as Heslipho, traces its origins back to Grafschaft Abbey. The town’s name change came after its purchase by the Dukes of the Mark from Cologne with the castle Schwarzenberg at its heart. Granted the town privileges in 1387 by Count Engelbert III and town rights by Count Dietrich von der Mark in 1397, Plettenberg grew to greater prominence.

It flourished in subsequent centuries through mining, iron casting and trade ties with the Hanseatic League. During the 20th century, the town expanded once more with the merging of the former town and surrounding Amt. Today, Plettenberg is home to around 14,012 residents and holds a twinning arrangement with the Austrian town, Bludenz. Its coat of arms, showcasing the emblem of the Counts of Mark, flanked by two towers, were granted along with town rights and formally acknowledged in 1942.

When to visit Plettenberg
