Landlocked within the heart of East Africa, Uganda is best known for its striking diversity and dynamic history. Nestling the African Great Lakes region within its borders, this equatorial gem sits snugly in the Nile basin. Named after the famed Buganda kingdom, which paints the southern part of Uganda, the country has a population of approximately 49.6 million.

Uganda has an alluring historical fabric woven with stories of the Empire of Kitara, the arrival of Arab traders, and the rule of the United Kingdom as a protectorate until 1962. It even faced a remarkable sleeping sickness epidemic in the early 20th Century. Post-independence was coloured with political tension between the central government and the Buganda Kingdom, tribal politics, and numerous power struggles.

English is the official language, but the air is rich with Luganda and a myriad of other languages like Ateso, Lango, Acholi, Runyoro, and Rukiga, adding a unique rhythm to the linguistic landscape. The current president of Uganda is Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power since 1986.

When to visit Uganda

The beauty of Uganda can be appreciated all year round, but the optimal times to visit are between December to February and June to August, during the dry seasons. These periods are ideal for wildlife-lovers, with opportunities for trekking to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, as well as excellent game spotting in national parks.

Late September to early October also provide a stunning spectacle, with wildlife gathering in large numbers around waterholes. Despite the changing seasons, Uganda's temperatures remain relatively constant, inviting travellers on an unforgettable adventure any time of the year.
