Born into a lesser noble family in Medellín, Spain, Hernán Cortés was an adventurer at heart, seeking fortune and glory in the New World. Boasting a solid early education in Latin and a keen understanding of the legal codes of Castile, Cortés was a figure both controversial and captivating.

During his time as a Spanish conquistador, Cortés led an expedition that resulted in the fall of the opulent Aztec Empire, placing much of mainland Mexico under Spanish rule. Cortés navigated the political landscape tactfully, allying with several indigenous peoples such as the Totonacs of Cempoala and the Nahuas of Tlaxcala, which significantly contributed to his success in overthrowing the Aztec Empire.

Cortés's legacy isn't without its dark patches though. Despite being initially welcomed by Aztec ruler Moctezuma II, unrest soon followed. An unfortunate series of events led to the deadly massacre by one of Cortés's lieutenants causing further revolt and eventually the death of Moctezuma himself. Despite all, Cortés was granted the title of Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca, and his influence remains palpable in Cortez today.
