Crookston inherited its name from Robert Croc, an Anglo-Norman lord who established the historic Crookston Castle on a hillock. The castle, first made of wood and later replaced by a stone structure around 1400, has seen many a tale unfold within its robust walls, from royal engagements to clan feuds. The Maxwells of Pollok restored it in the 19th century, and it was conferred to the National Trust for Scotland in 1931.
